What is authority?

-power to dictate or alter the freedom of others

-ability to grants rights to individuals

-ability to influence actions by eliminating choices

-ideal: limits or constraints

-power to promote the best(implies value or moral system) for society

-there are different types

-individuals perceive authority differently

-stronger force controls a lesser force( inequality of power)

-mutual agreement between two parties

Defining Authority: (update Monday 9/28/15)

• Early Authority: Based on a common set of axioms. 
• Ex: Bible in religion, Monarchy in government 

• Each society strives for consensus which evolves overtime 

• Shifts Overtime 
• Authoirty of few –––> Authority of many                                              (Dispersion of power)
• Religious Authority –––> Scientific & Political Authority                       (Secularism)
• Local economy –––> Industrial Revolution / Capitalism / Trade           (Globalization)
• Public –––> Private                                                                               (Privatization)
• Society –––> Individual                                                                         (Individualism)
