Student or Leader Fatality

In the event of a student (or co-leader) fatality while on a field trip:

• Call 911, allow emergency response to occur with local resources
• Call CC using the Campus Safety emergency number +1-719-389-6911. 
• Ensure the rest of the group is provided and cared for. Prepare to direct students to mental health resources.   
• Keep a record of as many details as possible pertaining to the incident.
• Do not contact the student’s/course leader’s emergency contacts. The county coroner or law enforcement (or possibly someone from CC) will contact the student’s parents.
• Prevent other students from contacting friends/family until victim’s family has been notified.
• Course leader and students should refrain from making statements to the media.  If you are contacted to answer questions, refer the media to the CC Communications Office, 719-389-6603. Media relations specialists in the Communications Office will handle all contact with the media.
